Another Black Rhino calf born on Phinda
March 2008
We are very proud to announce the birth of yet another black rhino calf on Phinda Private Game Reserve! The calf was discovered by two of Phinda's ‘black rhino monitors' in the Zuka hills close to Phinda Getty and Phinda Zuka Lodge. On Saturday 9 February, Zama Ncube and Thomas Khumalo discovered the tiny tracks together with the mothers' during their regular patrols. They located the mother soon afterwards, but were unable to get a view of the baby due to the thick bush. Not wanting to disturb the pair, they decided to leave the area and report their findings. Black rhino are listed as critically endangered, with approximately 3500 individuals left in protected areas today. Poaching and loss of habitat have decimated the Black Rhinoceros population, leaving only small populations in protected areas of Namibia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and South Africa. This new calf takes the total to 3 new calves born on the reserve since the black rhino were introduced in October 2004. The entire black rhino population on Phinda now stands at 21.
