Fish Monitoring at Kwandwe July 2008
Alfie Curling, game ranger at Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, has recently initiated a project that will help to identify the various fish species on the reserve, and ultimately determine some previously unknown information about them. The initial and ongoing phase of the project is to collect as many species of fish as possible and record their individual lengths, weights, locations and dates, as well as time of capture. Each ranger will assist in collecting the fish and documenting the research. The primary objectives of the research are to determine: Where various fish species occur on Kwandwe Reserve; What fish species are on the reserve; What size fish are active at certain times of the year; The average size of the fish in the river; The average size of the fish at certain locations in the river; Which areas will be more beneficial to take guests fishing The second phase of the project is to acquire tagging equipment so that the rangers can tag as many fish as possible and then release them back into the river. This will help to monitor their movements in the river if they get re-caught.
