Phinda has worms... (in a good way) April 2009
Vermi-compost is a highly nutritious organic compost or fertiliser that can be used directly on plants. The worm castings contain 5x more nitrogen, 7x more phosphorus and 11x more potassium than ordinary soil. The casts are rich in humic acids which condition and balance the PH of the soil. Worm waste is a highly concentrated liquid that is collected at the bottom of the worm farm and (after dilution with water) can be used to encourage plant growth.
The worm farms are housed in hardy plastic boxes (with lids to keep the monkeys out) and the worms feed on a daily diet of fresh organic wet waste generated from our lodge kitchens. The lodge Worm Champions are keeping a close eye on their daily feedings. Phinda Game Reserve has harvested their first litre of worm liquid waste which went to a local veggie grower. The ‘worm competition’ is stiff! Phinda Mountain’s worms are battling the summer heat wave, but have dedicated kitchen staff who feed them daily. Phinda Getty’s worms have multiplied and there are thousands of little baby worms. Phinda Zuka’s worms are flourishing and Phinda Forest’s worms continue to increase their intake each week.
