&BEYOND Madikwe
Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

A lions first kill
While a watching a rather large pride of lions at the dam starting to wake up, we noticed a francolin pretending to be wounded in order to lure the prowling 6month old lion cub away from it's nest. Unfortunatly for the francolin the lion cub a bit to much pounce, and in one FOWL swoop the francolin was locked between the jaws of the young lion. As you can imadgine the all the other young lions wanted a piece of the action, and the little cub put up a brave fight to ensure the bigger brothers and sisters didn't steal his prize. One of the other lions then happened across the nest and proceeded to eat the young francolin chicks as a starter for the night. The young cub made sure all the other lions and guests got a good look a his reward as he paraded up and down with the poor bird hanging from his jaws.
