AARDVARK ON THE RUN!

It’s not too often a guest will ask to see an aardvark on the first game drive, but Kay and Betty had it down on their bucket list, so my tracker, Simu, and I had a huge task on our hands.

We tried a few of the hotspots- Zuka Access, Martial Drive, Spuku-spuku, but returned empty handed on both occasions. The plan was starting to fade away, but luck was on our side, through possibly the most unfortunate accident.

We headed home on the night of the 29th September, and on our way both Simu and I heard as though something like a stick hit the car. We carried on to &Beyond Phinda Mountain Lodge. After 15 minutes Carolyne ask us to stop because she could not find her camera. Simu and I knew exactly where to drive, to the stop where we heard the stick knock the vehicle. We drove there and luckily we found it. We headed back and not more than 5 meters down the road Simu shouted “STOP! Aardvark!” We could not believe our luck!

I radioed Bruce and Brett to join us and unfortunately only Bruce was able to see it. He did get to follow it to it’s burrow not too far off the Zuka Boundary and Iskova junctions. I felt so proud of Simu and the ladies were ecstatic. It was also only my second aardvark sighting in my life.
