African Scops Owl
As the spotlight passed over the Fever Tree Forest the pale yellow bark seemed to glow even as the rays of light had left them behind. We were driving along the Mzinene River which flows into the magnificently diverse Lake St. Lucia. The open Landcruiser slowly weaved its way in amongst the trees and came to a sudden halt as Brigette noticed a small owl perched on a dead branch centimeters away. It was an African Scops Owl and although this tiny little owl is a common species there has only been a handful of sightings in Phinda over the years!
