Banjaar Tola
One of the largest and most scenic wildlife sanctuaries in India, Kanha National Park is an ideal habitat for both tigers and their prey species. The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows and ravines of Kanha shelter a significant population of rare species such as tiger, leopard, sloth bear, barasingha and wild dog. Kanha's mixed forests are interspersed with vast meadows known as maidans. These meadows support a high density of herbivores, including chital, barasingha, sambar and gaur, attracting predators such as the tiger, dhole or leopard to the fringes of the clearings. Perennial streams run through a number of such meadows, providing a source of water for the wildlife even in the hot summers. Kanha meadow, with its hundreds of chital grazing on a carpet of green grass against the backdrop of the majestic Sal forest, has been aptly referred to as 'the Ngorongoro of India".

It was during our morning drive that we saw and photographed a lesser seen bird called the Indian Courser in reserve.

We saw this female tiger with two cubs (around 3 months old) of which we have been hearing since the reserve has opened this season. It was really lucky to be there as cubs this small are generally kept out of view by female tigers.

Recently this male cub has been seen both from the road and from elephant back. This cub was from the last litter of a dominant female, and is now roaming independently on his own. It remains to be seen if he can establish himself as a dominant male soon.

The annual rut of the Barasingha has begun in Kanha National Park at the start of December. Barasingha males are at their impressive best with elaborate head gears and can be seen getting these huge antlers decorated with grasses. The rutting call which echoes in the misty grasslands early in the morning declares their readiness to breed, spar &...

We saw an uncommon turtle back in 2009 in Kanha , and photographed it to look up. Recently it was confirmed to be a Tricarinate Hill Turtle which had its closest range 500kms away from Kanha. This is a new state record for the state of Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh and also for the reserve. Click here to read more.

This particular evening drive had a surprise which neither me nor my guests could have expected. I would term this as the "Great Indian Jungle Hat-trick". In a span of 3 hours we sighted two wild dogs, a leopard & a tiger! All in that order. Finding all three top predators is pure matter of chance, taking into consideration the terrain...

With temperatures in Central India already soaring, animals are increasingly found nearer to the water holes. Chances of sighting big cats are also more often as they prefer to cool down in pools of water.

We sighted the lesser seen Jerdon's Baza in the reserve recently, perched upon a dead tree. Thanks to my guest Alfons who is an avid birder for spotting it.

It's not every day one sees the tiger walking out in the open grasslands. This is what happened during an evening game drive, which we were to find out, had something else in store for us. When we reached the grasslands, this tigress was near a waterhole. She started stalking some Barasingha (Swamp Deer) nearby. Seeing the tiger, the...

Feeding on a chital, we spotterd this tiger and had an opportunity to watch it feed for a short time. While the branches may have hindered the view to some extent, it gave me the opportunity to focus on the eyes and forehead of this beautiful animal.
