Matetsi
Before the mighty Zambezi River reaches the thundering splendour of the Victoria Falls, it passes the stylish and luxurious Matetsi Game Lodges - Water Lodge and Safari Camp. Matetsi is set on the same riverbanks about which the great explorer David Livingstone wrote so extensively. For unrivalled elegance and the exclusivity of 15km of private river frontage, Matetsi Game Lodges are an idyllic Zambezi retreat.

We spend four nights at Matetsi Exeter River Lodge and had some unbelievable sightings. Particularly the birding was first class. On our list were Meyer’s Parrot, racket-tailed roller, rock pratincole and of course the very rare african skimmer. Our experience exceeded our expectations. On our boat cruise along the mighty Zambezi we first saw a pair of...

When it comes to energy acquisition, nothing else can be thought of that threatens life! This lioness could not even hear the vehicle arrive neither could she feel existence of intruders over a long time. As we watched her we understood all the reasons beyond reasonable doubt that she needed not to waste anything in order to confirm the functions and...

Matetsi Morning Walk with Tracker Kenias Ncube and the little things that matter - Our guests had praised Kenias the tracker over for spotting all the little things during our game drives until this mid-morning walk around the KuduAlley/ Shumba South Areas. We started off with stocking a jenny of giraffe, saw some zebra and the magnificent Sable antelope...

This is one of the beautiful late September afternoon! The wonderful specimen of an adult Kalahari Male lion lazily resting for the day after a big meal of buffalo he shared with 5 male colleagues and a lioness early in the morning. He has shown signs of dominance and may be the future of a strong lion gene pool in the entire Matetsi Area.

On our morning drive we spotted the same pride as the evening before, near the tented camp. This was also the spot where our vehicle broke down. We had to transfer to another vehicle with the lions a few meters away. They obviously did not mind performing a show for us.

On this morning Game Drive we had the opportunity to see the Matetsi Safari Camp pride of lions again. Just on arrival at the Westwood Vlei, we saw a male lion chasing a lioness. We were so surprised that their focuss was not focused on the 500 plus buffalo just a few metres from them. On casting our eyes further to the left side, we then saw 4 more male...

What an amazing sighting of the Matetsi Lions this morning! What appeared to be just an sunrise encounter with the lioness and her cubs at Bore-hole 16 by Safari Camp ended up being a movie. Whilst we were still watching the 5, two young males emerged from behind us. Even though they were approaching from far we could see that they meant big business...

Yesterday 29-07-2007, we had the luck of seeing the lioness who is mother of four two-year old cubs mate with one of the 7 males just close to the water-hole at Safari Camp. For the previous days we have had the pleasure of seeing her with her four cubs and calling frequently. The previous day she had just ignored the cubs as they tried to hunt impala...

Today while at a morning meeting, a yearling female vervet monkey attacked and killed a black-eyed bulbul. In what seemed to be just some striking attempts by the little monkey ended up in the poor bird loosing its life. The other monkeys in the proximity did not join in the commotion but just looked on until later when the bird was completely dead...

The three male lions sighted in the Mukuyu area had for themselves to share a massive buffalo kill for three days. They killed the buffalo on 17-07-2007 and stayed at the site for the next 4 days. There were no signs of hyenas at the kill until the lions had left the whole half of the kill. The vultures sadly kept up the trees and could never dare get...
