Mnemba Island
Mnemba Island is the ultimate escape. Selected by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the three most romantic ocean destinations in the world, Mnemba surpasses all expectations. The island is an incomparable barefoot paradise: private cottages are hidden in the dappled shade. The soothing rhythms of tide and time will ease your entire being - mind, body and soul.

Yesterday evening we had another first on the island! A coconut crab was discovered on the beach which in itself is very unusual but what was stranger still was that it was during the late afternoon. Whilst looking at her we noticed she had a cache of eggs stuck to the underside of her abdomen She hid under a bush until nightfall and then quickly moved...

On this afternoon's dive with Paul we sat in the sand and watched some very interesting behaviour. This giant triggerfish was chewing on a very comfortable cushion star. During the 10 minutes we stayed with him he got more and more animated, throwing the star around, before dragging it into a hole and looking all proud of himself. During this a number...

This fantastic lobster was seen at Small Wall this morning. One of the biggest lobsters that we have seen over here for a long time, the photograph shows how incredible the colourations are on this species.

Whilst diving on Boathouse reef this morning we stumbled across a number of different juvenile species. Amongst them was this adorable little female white-spotted boxfish. From tip to tail it was around 5 cm long and decided to pose for a photo...aaah cute!

This is the second baby in two years for one of the two semi-habituated pairs we regularly see on the island.
I was unable to determine sex, despite the fact the little guy seemed to view me as a curiosity rather than a threat, letting me come within five metres of him/her.
Our new addition brings the total number of Ader’s duiker seen regularly to...

At Bayena recently we have been seeing an increasing number of the infrequently seen and stunningly beautiful juvenile Emperor Anglefish. This culminated in this morning's dive where we saw no fewer than 6 of them happily showing themselves off. A great sighting and certainly one for the logbook!

Over the last 2 months we have been seeing the rare and amazingly well camouflaged giant frog fish on the reefs around Mnemba. At least 4 individuals have been confirmed. Measuring up to 33cm the frog fish is a bottom dwelling ambush predator. It waits for small fish to swim close and, with a attack reflex faster than any other in the world (1/6000 of a...

I was on an early morning walk around the Island when I noticed two beautiful shells in the shallow water. As I knelt down, I noticed that it was two hermit crabs having a fight. I watched them for about ten minutes as the one was pinching the other with its pincers. It was clearly the stronger one. When you look for the small things, you often come...

We get to swim with dolphins often on Mnemba, but I have never been so close to so many as I was this morning. On sighting this pod of bottlenose dolphins we all donned masks, snorkels and fins and slipped in to the water, in a moment we were completely surrounded as the whole pod broke the surface to breathe. I could not see anything but dolphins, they...
