Over the last several days we have had an experience that has been interesting and witnessed by a number of us. I was driving on the road going south from the lodge, about 8 km from the lodge when I found a drag mark crossing the road. It was a leopard that had dragged a Springbok kill to the dunes. Several people had a look at the carcass (pictured...

Birds are now prolific after the good rains in the desert this year. Bird have become prolific and raptors such as Black Hariers, Red-necked Falcons and Booted Eagles have come in to hunt them. While taking guests to the bushman's cave near the lodge, we had a close-up encounter with a Booted Eagle. While showing the guests the rock art Lark-like Buntings...

Two days ago three cheetah were released onto NamibRand Nature Reserve, the reserve on which Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge is situated. With somewhere in the region of 15,000 springbok, the timing couldn't be better. With a good leopard population, some Spotted Hyenas (track have been seen recently,) and Cheetahs, the reserve now boasts a fair number of...

Today on my tour to Sossusvlei I saw another new bird for our region. It was a Karoo Thrush. We had never even seen it anywhere in the region, though the distribution map does indicate that it should occur close by.

This post is a follow on from my earlier post claiming that Sossusvlei had flooded. indeed the area did flood, and around the first of April the river actually flowed several days into the area. But the river never filled up the pan of Sossusvlei. This was a surprise to all of us who know the area for some time. The reason may actually be because of to...

We found an adult ostrich that had been killed by a leopard on a drive near bushman's koppjies. This was a remarkable place for a leopard to be able to kill an ostrich. Perhaps the leopards are forced now to hunt out in the open, as with the exceptional grass cover at the moment, the animals have moved away from the hills. In this case, thick grass...

As the desert greens up we are seeing more and more birds. On a trip to Bushman's Koppie we saw a Black Harrier. There have been past sightings, but it remains a rare bird in this area.
