Brown hyena observation

With our guide, Fillon Gaogaseb, as we were returning from an early morning drive to the Petrified Dunes and had turned the corner near ‘Hyena Water”, we spotted a brown hyena on the gravel plain near the mountains. The hyena appeared very relaxed and seemed unconcerned about our presence, and at one point while we were watching, it turned and walked toward us. During previous weeks, there had been several sightings of hyena tracks on the sand dunes nearby. This was a rare and exciting encounter for all of us as brown hyenas are seldom seen on the reserve.
