BUFFALO / LEOPARD STANDOFF
We responded to the sub-adult leopard feeding off the impala carcass next to Izwe Dam. Bruce and Sibu had reported on the radio that the animal was quite relaxed and the viewing was going well. Surprisingly upon our arrival a herd of 40 buffalo walked onto the scene, drinking at the dam. The herd then moved off and started to snort and grunt picking up the scent of the leopard and it's prey. Both Donald and myself positioned the game drive vehicles to view the leopard that was watching the buffalo. The leopard then stalked closer to the buffalo, and sneaked right to the edge of the thicket. The buffalo were within 3 metres of the leopard and the bold leopard just sat and bravely observed the grumpy bovines that were rather unsure if they should charge into the bush or retreat to the rest of the herd. We noticed in the dark that there were a few calves in and amongst the buffalo, and it was quite possible that they were being taught the smells of the leopard and why this smaller cat is not such a threat to the buffalo, but still needs to be watched. The stand-off continued for about 15 minutes and then the buffalo gave and loud grunt and ran off to join the rest of the herd that had moved away. Proudly the leopard stood up and went to lie closer to the impala carcass without a care for the buffalo threat.
