Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
cheetah on madikwe
Madikwe Safari Lodge Game Reserve is having trouble finding cheetah over the last couple of months. Our large lion population is affecting these very timid animals quite significantly. We now only have one collared male cheetah which is very rarely seen. One morning we went out looking for hippo near the river. As we drove past a small straight two track we noticed something on the road about 500m up. We stopped, reversed and checked with binoculars...it was our one and only cheetah sitting in the road!!!! As we slowly approached we realized it had just made a kill. It was still panting; trying to get its breath back after what must have been a very intense chase!! We got a little closer and saw that it was a young kudu cow. We continued to watch ‘our’ cheetah feasting away being very aware of it surroundings for about an hour. – I got some amazing photos in the morning light.
