Immersed in monkey-rich forest, Kichwa Tembo is an opulent oasis of Hemingway-style tents with sweeping views of the greatest grassland system in the world - the exquisite Masai Mara. Kichwa Tembo Bateleur Camp is a smaller, exclusive camp adjacent to the main camp.
Cooling Down.
Generally Hyeanas are nocturnal animals but in the Masai Mara you often see them in the middle of the day. As they are not used to the heat at that time, they often lie in mud pools to cool themselves off like this one in the photo. There had been a carcass that it had been feeding on and it was just resting before heading to its den.
My husband and I and friends were at Kichwa Tembo August 15th and 16th. Robert was our guide and we were madly dashing from one sighting to another when suddenly Robert spotted 3 hyena swimming in a roadside pool. It was a pregnant female and two young males. No one in our group had seen this before and we were so delighted. We watched them and took pictures for quite some time. It was really wonderful.
