Elephants On a Water Hole
Savute:-9th June'08.1750 hrs. Savute in Chobe is very different from the Delta or the Kalahari. Its more dry but has vast open grasslands. But it also has water pans all over. These water bodies serve as magnets for all kinds of game.Elephants are one of the most intelligent animals. They are know to smell water from some distance. And evenings are a good time to expect them at these water bodies. We reached one such water source and found about 5 of these gentle giants quenching their thirst. Its just unbelievable to be able to get so close to them. Its amazing that although they lead solitary lives they can be tolerant of eachother. What was almost surreal was as one finishing having his full, another was walking out of the bush smelling before coming close.Like this 5 more came in the 30 mins we were there. At one time we had around 7 elephants sharing the water. Then the sun went down and it was just breattaking to be behind the elephants watching the african sun go down and the changes in the sky.We all went back to camp feeling sober and humble amidst one of the most wild places on Earth.
