Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
first Bateleur on Madikwe
Madikwe safari lodge has been looking after guest on Madikwe game reserve for about 4years now and never, not once has we seen our 'symbol bird', the Bateleur Eagle on the reserve. Yesterday we where on our way to see a pride of lions that killed a giraffe on the plains, as we approached the kill there was an interesting bird flying above the kill. It rocked and swayed like a French tight-rope walker as if it was struggling to stay in the air. -it was a Bateleur Eagle!!! We stopped with haste to have a good look at the bird. I was so dumb-struck that I forgot to even attempt to take a photograph. This was so rare and special that we completely forgot about the lions that where feeding 20m away from us. Truly a sign that CCafrica really does belong on the special Madikwe Game Reserve.
