Gambolling Rhino
We have had a number of white rhino calves born this year. Whilst some of them are still sticking to the thick bush for the added protection, a few have started venturing out, providing us with some great sightings. There is a word that I can’t remember for the emotion that baby animals bring out in adults. It’s an amazing design brought about to encourage their protection and even crosses species boundaries. A particular young rhino definitely possessed this attribute and as he gambolled around his mom as only a baby can, I felt proud to be a part of protecting this once threatened species. The white rhino story is one we can all be ashamed of in that people were responsible for reducing this species to near extinction not too long ago, but we can also be proud in the way the world rallied around this animal and some particularly amazing people turned its fate around.
It should be a constant reminder not only of the other species of rhino that are still highly endangered, but also of the many species of plants, birds and animals that require our constant vigilance, custodianship and respect if they are to survive.
