Giraffe Birth

We had been driving for almost an hour when we came upon a wonderful, amazing sighting. What had looked like a normal giraffe sighting turned out to be such an amazing event for us.

In actual fact, we came upon this female when it had just given birth, and was on the process of licking the baby removing the afterbirth. We watched spellbound for some ten minutes before the baby began to try and stand up. After several attempts it eventually managed to stand on its fours, with us giving some encouraging whispers. The mother then slowly guided the youngster away from us into some cover.

For us it was just how close we had been to actually see the female drop its young.
