Madikwe Safari Lodge
Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

hyeana in the day
To see a brown hyeana anywhere is very rare. Madikwe Safari Lodge is privileged enough to have really good sightings of these animals. We see them hovering around lion carcasses, scavenging on old sculls in our staff village. Moving through the camp in the middle of the night and even pups in a local den! But yesterday I was amazed when we went to a waterhole near the lodge to look for elephants and found a brown hyeana, very relaxed DRINKING water in the heat of the day. There have been recorded sightings of this animal moving in the day where the game densities are low, but is very rare to see one drinking! These are Kalahari scavengers designed to never have to drink at all. Seems like everyone is open to a drink every now and then:)
