Madikwe Safari Lodge
Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

HYENA & WILD DOG CONFLICT
Late in the afternoon we found a pack of wild dogs hunting. We found it impossible to keep up with them. So I decided to wait a few hundred meters away with a herd of impala in front of us. Our patience paid off. Before long there were impala and wild dogs running everywhere. Again, we could not keep up. So we just sat and listened. All of a sudden we heard a noise that sounded as if they had made a kill. We raced over to see what had happened. When we arrived, we saw that the wild dogs kill had been taken over by hyenas and a lengthy battle followed. The hyenas ate as quickly as they could and tried to keep the wild dogs back. The wild dogs waited for a hyena to become isolated and then attack it from all angles. This carried on for over half an hour until eventually the wild dogs gave up and left the hyenas to feed on the spoils.
