Home Sightings Tanzania Wildlife Lake Manyara Is it a Butterfly?

Lake Manyara
Sheltering below the plunging walls of the Great Rift Valley lies the quintessentially serene Lake Manyara Tented Camp, tucked in an evergreen forest on bird-rich Lake Manyara. Lake Manyara National Park is where Ernest Hemingway camped on the hunting safari that inspired his book, Green Hills of Africa.

Is it a Butterfly?
Or, is it something else. Open this sighting to see more photos. Lake Manyara is not only beautiful but it has the most beautiful Butterflies flying around at the moment. We noticed this insect flying around and automatically thought it was a butterfly until we could not find it in the book. I decided to take some photos so that we could identify it later when I noticed that it closed its wings sometimes. I then thought it may be a moth and looked in the insect book.... and there it was, a Superb False Tiger moth. It is really amazing because it is a daytime moth which is unusual and it lands with its wings open most of the time. It definitely had us guessing for a while!
