Kirkman's Kamp
Kirkman's Kamp, with its spectacular views of the unspoilt wilderness and the Sabi Sand River, is regarded as one of the best loved lodges in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. A well known historic camp, originally built in the early 1920's Kirkmans Kamp celebrates the atmosphere of an early South African lowveld homestead. |

The tranquil sound of a lazy stream of water overpowered the joyous morning chorus as another day dawned in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve . But there was something different in the water on this morning. A red tinge to the surface lingered as it flowed passed the massive Sycamore Fig tree(Ficus Sycomorus). The sound of flesh being ripped accompanied by the...

The steam rose as it escaped from the warm bodies of the felines only to fade into eternity as it met the first rays that fell upon the dramatic scene. The low growls were synonymous with an event that has transpired for centuries passed. The eternal battle between lion and buffalo. The buffalo bull’s boss was draped downward with his muzzle anchored...

Imagine my disappointment when I came around the corner and saw a fresh wild dog kill which was evident that I had missed. On this occasion it was a female nyala and knowing that you have just missed one of the most spectacular sightings of the wilderness by minutes is always a little disappointing! That was how I felt yesterday when for the third day in...

Our most viewed leopard at Kirkman's Kamp is almost all grown up. The cub named "Son of Rollercoaster" after his mom, is hunting a lot on his own and becoming more and more independant each day. His mother was seen mating with another male so in a few months he will have to fend for himself.

Finally we have found the den at Kirkman's Kamp . Most guests at the lodge have gotten to see the hyenas walking on our lawn whilst having dinner, so we have always known that they live closeby. We found the den less than a kilometre away from camp. The hyenas have been providing us with fantastic viewing with a lot of the cubs becoming very curious...

Last year the wild dogs denned far in the west of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and we are delighted to have them denning just north of our boundary. The wild dogs had given birth but we are yet to see the pups. There are 2 females that were pregnant and each of them could give birth to a large litter. Last year one female gave birth to 9 pups! I can't...

It is always amazing to see what the bush holds...Yesterday morning's game drive was no exception. The rollercoaster female had killed an adult impala ram and as she bought her son back to the kill she was unpleasantly surprised to find the dominant male feeding from her kill. She prompty left the area with her son in the area to wait until his...

Kirkman's Kamp is well known for predator interaction, but what was seen by us on game drive takes it to a hole new level. We heard that a leopard had made a kill down at the Sand River and was feeding with her cub. We got to the kill (impala) only to find nothing there. We went down to the river and found two leopards (a cub and another leopard)...

Can you imagine my surprise when following lions, we encountered another sighting that almost made my tracker, Kholin leap into the vehicle. The tip of a huge python moving through the grass about to pass inched from his feet as the vehicle followed a pride of lions. This morning we were following the Charleston pride through the bush and all of a...
