During walks it's often the smaller stuff that surprises us. This crab spider in its nest of curled-up grass was almost invisible.

Warthog Kill:
Sunise over kwandwe, we head out from river lodge. Not 5 minutes in we come across 2 lionesses and a year old cub. With the echoes of the newly dominant male coming from across the fish river they head South. As the moved through euphorbia thickets they flushed a sounder of warthogs. All hell broke loose as pigs went running everywhere with...

Heading out the other afternoon, going to look for Elephants, we had to go towards the Great Fish River and cross it to get to the North of the reserve. Just before we got the two roads which lead to the crossing I noticed another vehicle had beaten me to the road I wanted to take to the crossing, so saying to my guests that instead of eating this...

We set out to follow up on reports of a leopard in the south, apparently feeding on a warthog carcass. Dali, Sakhi and I searched for her near the kill but she was nowhere to be found. A short distance away, we heard kudu and jackal alarm calls. We moved closer to the sounds, and to our surprise and delight, we found a female leopard crouching in the...

This particular afternoon was extra special. We couldn't quite believe our eyes when we spotted this brown snake eagle. It isn't on Kwandwe's bird list (yet) and I was so thrilled I nearly forgot to take a photo! We stayed with it for a short while before it flew off.

I am pretty fortunate to have an excellent tracker in Andy Njawe. His love of the smaller things is always refreshing and he has an eye for bees and chameleons. There are very few trackers able to spot chameleons, most have never even seen one. The species most commonly encountered is the Eastern Cape Dwarf Chameleon (Bradypodion ventrale). These little...

This morning the weather was perfect, sunny and fresh, and not a breath of wind. First thing i heard on the radio was something quite unusual. Almost all the cheetahs on Kwandwe had been seen almost on top of each other. There were two adult males, a young female and her four cubs, and an older female and her four subadults, all within a few hundred...

One of kwandwe's female cheetahs has 5 cubs, which are now 13 months old. About 2 days ago she was found along with another female which has three cubs now (she origanally had five cubs, but has lost two), and the two dominant male cheetahs.
There was a bit of fighting, snarling, hissing, etc amonst all of them.
I'm not too sure wether she lost one of...

A pale chanting goshawk had successfully killed a rodent and had started to feed. Within a short time, a second goshawk arrived on the scene and attempted to steal the kill. We watched the two birds fight it out until the opportunistic second bird made a hasty retreat carrying the mangled remains. Great viewing - although goshawks are commonly seen at...

In my last few days as a Kwandwe guide I am constantly reminded of the wonder and magic that this place has to offer. It is with a heavy heart that I leave some of the most magnificent cheetah sightings that Africa has to offer. The open plains and undulating terrain seem to suit these spectacular animals and it seems as if they had never left. The truly...
