Lake Manyara
Sheltering below the plunging walls of the Great Rift Valley lies the quintessentially serene Lake Manyara Tented Camp, tucked in an evergreen forest on bird-rich Lake Manyara. Lake Manyara National Park is where Ernest Hemingway camped on the hunting safari that inspired his book, Green Hills of Africa. |

In our drive through jungle forest of Northern Lake Manyara National Park , we where looking for silvery chicked horn bill, and luckily we spotted flocks of female hornbill flying around noisily. As we were watching and approached them, one of my guests saw two males fighting on the ground. One would likely have to die or give up for the mating to...

During our daily game drives in Lake Manyara National Park , we always enjoy the presence of olive baboons from the escarpment down to Mto wa mbu Village. One of the male baboons is seriously changing his walking style. This male can stand upright and walk with his hind legs for up to a kilometre distance or more! He is well known as " Mzee wa...

We had an interesting sighting with my guests as we parked for almost half an hour watching a baby baboon getting what we thought was a rock climbing lesson as it was trying to get on top of big rock. Before it reached the summit the mother pulled its tail causing the little one to fall down and have to start all over again. That happened several...

Finally it has happened. Nature played its role as the new arrivals are here. After the four lionesses moved for years without a male lion. On 18th Oct 2010 I reported the sighting of an unknown male lion mating with one of the females and I predicted that we would see the cubs in mid March if the mating was successful. Just before we closed the season...

During the entire season we had many busy days. Just before we closed Lake Manyara Tree Lodge for the April staff holiday, we had a few guests. It is normally quite quiet before we close. With those few guests on drives, most of the people really wanted to see a leopard but very few actually got to see. Suprisingly on 1 April whilst on our way off for a...

Lions continue to entertain us here in Lake Manyara as we are still having some great sightings. As we all know lions spend 18 to 20 hours a day sleeping but even to watch them sleeping is quite entertaining as you can see the attached picture I shot.

There was no carcasses, no scanning for food and there was no thermal to glide. But this white backed vulture decided to entertain us by flying and doing some strange manouvers in the air. We watched it for several minutes near the hippo pools and I couldn't tell why he was doing that.

This is one of the most wonderful sightings I have seen. Stopped at Bagayo River watching an old male giraffe chewing the cuds, we saw an adult and juvenile red billed oxpeckers landed on a giraffe's back. They were side by side. Then the adult bird flew under the belly and landed on the hind left thigh. Suprising the baby, he did the same, but landed on...

We have been enjoying some great sightings of this beautiful palm nut vulture here in Lake Manyara . The best area to see it is around the ground water forests all the way to the wild palm trees near the Hippo pools.

Driving to Lake Manyara Tree Lodge between Mahogany gate and Hot springs we were shocked to see a male Wathog chewing some meat from a dead Ostrich at the lake shore.
