Exeter is situated within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, renowned for having the best Big Five game-viewing in South Africa, if not the world. The Reserve is famous for its incredible leopard sightings. The Sabi Sand leopards have grown accustomed to safari vehicles, thereby permitting close up sightings and extraordinary photographic opportunities.
Leopard Cub Update
The leopard cub viewing over the past two months has been spectacular. We are lucky enough to have three new litters all aged between 10 and 16 weeks old. The Shangwa female (cubs aged at 16 weeks) has unfortunately lost two of her three cubs to Hyena. The only surviving cub is a young male who is pretty nervous around the vehicles. We have finally had confirmation, that the Makubela has two six-week-old cubs at a den south of Exeter Camp. Unfortunately we have not viewed these cubs yet but traditionally cubs are only moved from the initial den around eight weeks of age. The highlight of the month has certainly been the Makwela female and her three cubs. These ten week old cubs are very relaxed around the vehicle and are regularly being seen moving to different dens close to Dulini Safari Lodge. Many guests at Exeter have been treated to this spectacle of African wildlife, and we hope that it continues into the dry season.
I saw the 3 cubs of the Malwela female on my first game drive at Dulini 17June when she moved them to a safe spot on a bank above a dry stream bed--have awesome pictures and memories. Thanks for the report.
