LEOPARD, LION, HYENA & HIPPO FEED OFF SAME CARCASS
Kirkman's Kamp is well known for predator interaction, but what was seen by us on game drive takes it to a hole new level. We heard that a leopard had made a kill down at the Sand River and was feeding with her cub. We got to the kill (impala) only to find nothing there. We went down to the river and found two leopards (a cub and another leopard) our tracker, Kolin, told us that he couldn't understand why the mother was so nervous. We decided to leave the leopards as they were nervous and we went back to the kill. But there waiting for us was the mother leopard herself (explains why the other two were nervous - one was a stranger) She tried a few times to pull the kill in the tree but was unsuccessful. She then left just as hyenas came and started fighting over the kill. We the heard something behind us and a hippo arrived next to us and started to feed off the stomach content and then off of the remains itself. Meanwhile the hyenas were going crazy fighting over the kill. All of a sudden six lions arrived at the scene which sent the hyenas scrambling in all directions! The lions then fought over the remains. We then decided to make our way back home but saw that some of the lions had chased the leopard cub into a tree. Eventually we manged to make our way back to the lodge to celebrate a drive we will surely never forget.
