Leopard on the hunt for dinner
Late afternoon we stopped to look at fresh leopard tracks that went off the road into the bushes and then heard the alarm call of baboons. We went towards the baboons to see in which direction they were looking. We went in that direction to search for the leopard. Our guide Gee, informed the other guide Katenbo of the area that we were searching in. Katembo approached from a different direction and found the leopard trying to catch one of two porcupines which were hiding in a thicket of palm trees. We sat for 30 minutes listening to the sounds of the attack and the defence. The leopard eventually gave up and moved on. He stopped at a termite mound and groomed himself and then went up a tree to look at the area. He then continued the hunt – now in the dark. He positioned himself under high palm trees were baboons were settling in for the night. The baboons choose these trees as leopard can not climb them. It was dark and we could no longer see anything and have moved on.
