Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
Let the animals come to us
The afternoon drive started off very quietly, all we saw was the back of an elephant bull moving off into the thicket. I decided a nice sundowner on the plains would be the best option moving forward. We were enjoying a beautiful sunset when a black backed jackal came strolling along. He sat and watched us and we identified him as one of the research subjects. Then at a safe distance 3 White rhino came strolling past, they were completly unphases by us. keeping safety in mind at all times I scanned the area while my guests were enjoying the rhino. I could not beleive my eyes when I looked behind the game veiwer to see a lioness lying in the road 30m away. Thank goodness she showed no signs of interest in us. I rapidly ushered the guests on to the vehicle, we repositioned and another lioness came walking down the road. They moved off into the bush after some zebra so I used the chance to pack up the drinks and hit the road.
