Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

lions catch two warthogs
Seven sub-adult lions were on the move just before sunset when they happened upon two warthogs that were returning to their burrow to rest for the night. The lions immediately gave chase, the warthogs seemed to be caught unawares. Six of the lions caught the one warthog and quickly devoured the prey, the other lioness caught the other warthog but was some distance away from the rest of the lions but had the whole warthog for herself. She ate quickly as she seemed to realise the rest of the pride would find her and of course want some of her meal. She was right, the rest of the pride did find her and a fight broke out, the noise was incredible, the fight was short but ferocious, and was over in less than two minutes, two of the lions were left with deep scratches on their faces and shoulders. Soon after the warthog was finished, the lions lay around, licking each other and rubbing heads together, so to confirm their bonds.
