Lions take their respective corners.
The weather is certainly chilly and Winter has made itself very known. It is always amazing how your mind forgets about the cold when you are watching something amazing; It seems that the resident lions on Kwandwe are sorting out their differences and establishing some solid territories. We had a great time one night this week when we witnessed a young male lion anxiously sniffing and heading along a path with total determination. After about 30 minutes of following him he sniffed a certain bush and immediately put his nose to the ground and ran off hot on the trail of something. To our surprise, he led us straight to a much older and larger male who he unceremoniously chassed away through the bush. They ran over a hill, had a brief confrontation and, happy that he had seen the offending bigger male back into his own territory, they both went their separate ways. It was incredible how they young male knew exactly where to go; you could almost picture a map of various scents that he was following. After a tumultuous few months, it’s great that these big cats have each found a niche and I’m looking forward to watching them push the boundaries as they continue to size each other up.
