Exeter is situated within the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, renowned for having the best Big Five game-viewing in South Africa, if not the world. The Reserve is famous for its incredible leopard sightings. The Sabi Sand leopards have grown accustomed to safari vehicles, thereby permitting close up sightings and extraordinary photographic opportunities.
Lions tested for TB
What an amazing experience! The Kruger Park is conducting tests to see to what extent Tuberculosis is effecting the Lion population. The rangers and guests at Exeter were able to participate with the vets and get up close and personal to these apex predators. Initial figures suggest that currently TB is prevalent in about 70% of the lions tested thus far. Once the lions were darted, a small shaving was made on the neck and they were injected. Two days later, they were re-darted and the shaving was inspected, if a growth appeared then the lion was TB positive. The lions were attracted to the area with a buffalo carcass by a series of buffalo bellows played from a loud speaker. 1 male, 2 females and 5 sub-adults were darted and tested and I am pleased (and a little surprised) to say that all 8 lions were TB negative. More tests will be conducted on other prides in the area and we will receive a more detailed report at a later stage.

Brendan - What IF a lion tested postive for TB? Would the lion be destroyed? Do lions get TB from eating the carcass of a positive tested buffalo? I understand that TB amongst buffalo's is common?
