Madikwe
Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

Lucky night
Winter has really started here at Madikwe and it is freezing on the later afternoon and early morning drives. As we started out drive last night I was not very sure if we will see any night time creatures because of the cold, but I was pleasantly surprised. We stumbled upon a little baby scrubhare, or Leveret, in the road, a Marsh Owl, Spotted Eagle Owl, Springhares and a first for me in the reserve, a Porcupine close to the lodge. The night was very cold, but very exciting as well.
