LUNAR ECLIPSE
It was most probably one of the darkest lunar eclipses ever. Just after 8 pm, the Kirkman’s Kamp guests gathered on the lawn to enjoy their after dinner Port and Sherry. Wrapped up in blankets, shawls and hot water bottles, we watched the first bit of shadow moving through the full moon. The lawn was brightly lit up by the moon until the shadow covered about ¾. Suddenly the first stars were appearing. The constellation of Scorpio and the southern cross, even Saturn was visible. The Kirkman’s Team and guests were now exited, taking pictures with the provided tripod and hanging on to their binoculars. Just after 10 pm the sky went pitch black and the full moon became blood red right above the guests lying on their blankets. Most of us have never seen the stars in the sky so bright - the Milky Way was like an ocean of stars appearing in the sky. It was a phenomenal event in the perfect conditions. - A delight that will never be forgotten. Thanks to Kirkman’s Ranger Mark Lautenbach and Geraldine Whyte who made an effort to take these fantastic photographs.
