Madikwe
Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

A lone Cheetah male was found in the early morning. This is a truly special sighting as there are not many Cheetah at Madikwe. It was noted that he was nervous and was walking from one Acacia thicket to the next, we speculated, that it may have been due to our presence, or that he was in an area that has a high lion population and that he may have been...

We have recently been viewing a spotted hyeana and pup sharing a den with a warthog, well until yesterday we where..
We where following a pride of 7 young lions when they stumbled upon the den. The warthog come flying out and into the claws of the lions.
But one warthog just is not enough for them all, so there was a huge fight, and lions where...

Mark called me on the radio and told me he found a Back Rhino. With almost 40 in the reserve you would think we see them more often, but this is a drop everything and get there sighting. We were in the same area but still a bit of a drive away, got there in record time just to see the rhino before its going to walk off in the treeline. Decided to follow...

Seven sub-adult lions were on the move just before sunset when they happened upon two warthogs that were returning to their burrow to rest for the night. The lions immediately gave chase, the warthogs seemed to be caught unawares. Six of the lions caught the one warthog and quickly devoured the prey, the other lioness caught the other warthog but was some...

Winter has really started here at Madikwe and it is freezing on the later afternoon and early morning drives. As we started out drive last night I was not very sure if we will see any night time creatures because of the cold, but I was pleasantly surprised. We stumbled upon a little baby scrubhare, or Leveret, in the road, a Marsh Owl, Spotted Eagle Owl,...

This hyena den has provided us with hours of pleasure. And nothing was different for us this morning. Got there just after sunrise and mom and her pup was out and about. First the pup was a bit skittish but later on seemed to have forgotten all about our presents there. Exploring was his mission for the morning and had a look, smell and taste at...

On morning game drive we saw a pride of lion looking very lean and knew that they were going to be hunting tonight. So with the afternoon gamedrive planned, we left the lodge just to hear that there were two other females at the waterhole close to the lodge stalking. Plans changed quickly and after an hour of sitting at the dam watching the waterbuck,...

one of the very special animals we get here on madikwe is the rare and threatened brown hyeana. it is a very shy and elusive creature that covers many kilometers a night in search for food. during the day it is sayed that brown hyeana are social animals helping with the upbringing of the alpha females cubs and at night they are solitary scavangers....
