Madikwe Safari Lodge
Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.

Madikwe plains
For some of you that have been to Madikwe you have experience the beautiful plains that sit towards the north eastern sections of the reserve. If you haven’t been here let me try explain. The area is massive and filled with all sort of game. Springbok, wildebeest, zebra, gemsbok, eland, steenbok, rhino and because of this the lions tend to hang around the outskirts for hunting reasons. This area is so stunning at the moment and it is always one of the highlights of our guests stay.
On this particular evening there was a massive storm approaching from the northwest. The sky was pitch black and the rain was pumping down to our west. There was a gap between the horizon and the clouds so when the sun dropped down to set, everything fell into place. The sky went orange which created an amazing backdrop for great photos. I got all my guests off the vehicle to lie on their bellies for the low angle. While horizontal on the floor, a territorial wildebeest bull decided to walk into fame to complete the already amazing scene. The rush of the storm approaching at great speed, the wind ripping through the plains while herds of animals surrounded us was just incredible. Not to mention the great photos we all left with.
