Madikwe occasionally gets the opportunity to spot this extremely rare animal and from what I have read they don’t see humans as a natural threat…I now know this is true!! Once we found it crossing the road we jumped out and followed it for sometime. It was completely unfazed by our presence....

Madikwe Game Reserve is having trouble finding cheetah over the last couple of months. Our large lion population is affecting these very timid animals quite significantly. We now only have one collared male cheetah which is very rarely seen.
One morning we went out looking for hippo near the river. As we drove past a small straight two track we noticed...

Last night my guests requested that we go to a popular water hole and conduct a “game drive” from the dam wall. This time of the year, when it is very dry in Madikwe the water holes are often very busy in the late afternoon. Unfortunately this was not the case last night. Three weeks ago I got a radio call while on drive from the ecologist of Madikwe. He invited us to come see a lion that had been darted to remove his collar that has become unnecessary.
As we arrived we could see this massive creature lying on its side faaast asleep! We all jumped of the vehicle and got a closer look.
The guest had the opportunity to...

To see a brown hyeana anywhere is very rare. Madikwe is privileged enough to have really good sightings of these animals. We see them hovering around lion carcasses, scavenging on old sculls in our staff village. Moving through the camp in the middle of the night and even pups in a local den!

Madikwe safari lodge received a donation some time ago to buy a telemetry set. The idea is to collar and follow brown hyeanas as the first research project for brown hyeanas on the reserve.
Last week our telemetry set arrived!! We are still waiting for the collars and the project will be up and running by the weekend. This is a great thing both for...

Madikwe safari lodge has been looking after guest on Madikwe game reserve for about 4years now and never, not once has we seen our 'symbol bird', the Bateleur Eagle on the reserve.
Yesterday we where on our way to see a pride of lions that killed a giraffe on the plains, as we approached the kill there was an interesting bird flying above the kill. It...

on arrival there where two subadult lions sleeping next to the carcass. this prevented the 9 spotted hyeanas in total from coming to feed and they where getting very very close, but at the end they cut their losses and left empty...
