Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is perched on the edge of the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater at the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania. It lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, which covers more than 8 000 square kilometres (3 100 square miles) of pristine African wilderness.
MARTIAL EAGLE KILL
It was a wonderful day with a lots of fantastic different sightings in the Crater since the early morning...Whilst on our way out to the lodge at the Crater ascent road 100 miters before the gate, we came across a Martial Eagle that had killed a red dicker. We usually see them in this same area. It was about 5 metres away from us and it seemed that the kill had happened a few minutes abefore.
It was search a lovely sighting and it was my first time to see a Martial Eagle kill. They are the largest of the African eagles and incredibly powerful, capable of knocking an adult man off his feet. They have enough power in one foot to break a man's arm. As the largest eagle in Africa, the Martial eagle weighs in at almost 14 pounds (6.5 Kg.) and has a wingspan of about 6 feet 4 inches. It is 32 inches long. The upperparts are dark brown with a white belly and black streaks. Their legs are white and have very large talons. The immature bird looks quite different from the adult. It is quite amazing!
