Since winter, when the pack was denning at Ngala , our sightings of the wild dogs have been more limited. Perhaps it just feels that way because we used to view them on a daily basis during that time. Yesterday morning, however, a pack of 19 animals were seen attempting to hunt waterbuck near a waterhole. The excitement was great, although they were...

In the west of our reserve last week we observed a pride of 27 lions. The make-up of the pride was 18 cubs, 6 females and 3 males. Since starting at Ngala in July last year, I have never seen so many animals together at one time. It was absolutely mind-blowing! It is at times like this when one realises that Ngala (the meaning for lion in Shangaan) was...

The resident warthogs at Ngala Safari Lodge are spending a lot of time in camp at the moment. Apart from the fact that they keep our lawn short and our guests entertained, they find the camp a safe place to try and successfully raise their young. Walking up to my room the other day after game drive I took this picture of 5 piglets fast asleep on...

A few nights ago I was out on a training drive when we spotted Nightjar on the road. As we looked more closely I noticed a small chick that was huddled up closely behind its mother. I presume it is a Fiery-necked Nightjar but always struggle to differentiate between species.

Recently we have been viewing this leopard cub with his relaxed mother. A good sighting of him and his mother however has been difficult to come by as she holds her territory along the river. After some summer rain the vegetation in this area is thick and overgrown making them difficult to track and find. After lots of patience and perseverance we...

Last night we probably experienced one of the most unbelievable things I have ever seen in the bush. A pride of 24 lions had been found in the West of Ngala Private Game Reserve , consisting of 18 cubs and 6 lionesses. I will never forget the feeling of arriving in the sighting seeing all these animals lying in an open clearing. It was mind-blowing!...

On game drive the other night we spotted this Barn Owl along the Timbavati River. It was the first one I have even seen since starting at Ngala in May 2010.

A male lion was walking along the road with purpose, stopping regularly as he picked up a scent. He kept changing directions so we realised he was definitely looking for something. Our guesses were numerous. Looking for his brothers? A female in oestrus? Following a herd of buffalo? Another male lion in his territory? Perhaps even a leopard? What we...

Approximately 3 months ago one of the better known leopards at Ngala , the Oppy Female was killed by another female leopard over a territorial dispute. She left behind a female cub of about 13 months. It was touch and go whether the youngster would make it, not having perfected the art of hunting under her mothers' watchful eye. Three months down the...

A mother and 3 young cheetah had been found. Cheetah always cause great excitement because it’s the big cat we see least frequently at Ngala . We arrived to find the 3 youngsters chasing and tackling each other with mom lying a little bit away from them. All of a sudden the mother got up, straight into stalk mode, as in the distance she had...
