Hyenas are such misunderstood, and sadly often disliked animals. This little cub was playing and running all around a termite mound that is being used as a den site, and eventually sat right near the top of the mound, trying to win over everyone's heart.

These lions were lying in a small thicket, finding refuge from the warming sun. All of a sudden, a breeding herd of Buffalo arrived on the scene and chased the lions off. Out of harms way, these gazes suggest that maybe later the lions would return the favour!

We were alerted by a Jackal's alarm call, so off we went to check it out. On arrival we found a male Cheetah that had just taken down an Impala, he was catching his breath and started removing the stomach etc. from the carcass. The Jackal who by now had sensed a possible meal, had long since stopped alarming, and was sussing out a strategy to get a chunk...

One of my favorite owls, the White Faced Scops Owl. This one posed for just long enough to snap a few photographs before flying off. I especially love the contrast of its big orange eyes against the black background of the night sky.

Cheetahs can be rather difficult to come by around Ngala , so it's been exciting lately to have a coalition of 2 males and a female with 2 youngsters hanging around of late. This morning we were treated to the mother and her youngsters basking in the warm sun on top of a termite mound, and later in the afternoon we were privileged to watch them feed...

The reserve was flooded with tracks from a pack of wild dogs. The pack, themselves have given us the run around, so it was a last effort to re-check one of the water holes. From the far side of the water hole a hyena appeared and then another. Vultures started to drop and it was apparent that the pack had killed nearby. We followed one of the hyenas...

The yellow billed oxpecker is listed as vulnerable in South Africa and is an uncommon resident in the Kruger National Park, so we're pretty fortunate to have a pair that hang around not too far from Ngala Safari Lodge . This individual posed nicely while snacking on ticks off of an old buffalo bull.

Night dives are always interesting, and even the slightest glimpse of any of the secretive nocturnal animals is exciting. This little guy was obliging enough to pose for a little while before bouncing off.

We spent the morning following the 'Leadwood Female' as she moved from termite mound to termite mound, pausing at the top of each to scope out anything to hunt.
