Ngala Private Game Reserve has the privilege of being the only private reserve in the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Opulent Ngala Safari Lodge pays tribute to a bygone era of elegance while Ngala Tented Camp is chic and modern.
NIGHTJAR AND CHICK
A few nights ago I was out on a training drive when we spotted Nightjar on the road. As we looked more closely I noticed a small chick that was huddled up closely behind its mother. I presume it is a Fiery-necked Nightjar but always struggle to differentiate between species.
Why do these birds hang out on the road at night? I get so nervous with the vehicles - hopefully the young ones can get off the road fast!

As far as I understand, the road retains heat from the sun’s rays during the day so it is a good place for them to keep warm. More plausible though, it is also a good position for the bird to see insects flying above them creating a silhouette against the evening sky.

Okay - good answers. Do you think they do most of their eating at night? Is that why they are called 'night' jars?
