We have been having amazing sightings of Greater Snipes here at Nxabega . There is a small pan about five minutes drive from the lodge where we shoot off to, to get a look at these interesting birds using their long bills to probe into the soft mud looking for larve and bugs. On one occassion we managed to see four of the birds at once. They often feed...

It has been a while since we last saw these animals. They're normally seen during our low floods. But we were fortunate yesterday on the boat to see these three sitatungas on the flood plains with the lechwes. They were not relaxed but we managed to vew them for at least two minutes, which was not bad, before they ran into the reeds.

Yesterday morning Jacques, Moffat and I drove south east of Nxabega concession to explore some other parts on foot. While driving we saw some interesting birds like African pipit, wood sandpaper, Slaty egret. We drove into a big open area with long grass and Jacques pointed out a small brown bird which was flying around. We all picked up our...

We went out on the walking safari. We had covered just less than a kilometre ,when I spotted a buffalo in the distance. We then heard lions roaring in the distance as well. These roaring lions did deter our walking plans a little bit as we then went for a drive more in the east of the concession instead where we had heard them. Without much luck, we did...

Yesterday late evening we headed out for a walk. It was Jacques the regional guide trainer, Moffat and I. And Moffat took the lead. We decided to head north of the concession, to the riverine forest where we usually see Pel’s fishing owl, a special bird of our region. There were lots of bird calling; Like woodland king fisher a summer visitor,...

Yesterday morning we went for the walking assessment with our regional Guide trainer [Jacques] and Lesh [ranger] was on the lead. It was overcast, and we headed out to the western side of the Lodge where we saw an explosion of insects all around and lots of birds calling. We stopped to have a look and saw some beautiful and rare species of birds: Red...

A few weeks ago when I was on my way from a guest transfer, Max and I spotted a mother leopard carrying her cub across the bridge. We then heard the crying of another cub. The mother dropped the one which was in her mouth and rushed back to pick up the crying cub. They all then left the bridge and went into the thickets. It’s amazing to see the...

Amazing - on my way to pompom airstrip for the drop off, I saw two hyenas along the road moving, but showing no signs of hunger. As IA looked on the other side there were five jackals in the shade of an open area. The hyenas saw them. The jackals had four young ones which were about one year old. The chasing was started by the hyenas. The baby jackals...

The colours of the twig snake are so cryptic that they lie and wait for their prey to land close to them. Here a damselfly lands on the head of this twig snake.
