Kirkman's Kamp
Kirkman's Kamp, with its spectacular views of the unspoilt wilderness and the Sabi Sand River, is regarded as one of the best loved lodges in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. A well known historic camp, originally built in the early 1920's Kirkmans Kamp celebrates the atmosphere of an early South African lowveld homestead. |
OWL EATING A WILD DOGS' KILL!
Imagine my disappointment when I came around the corner and saw a fresh wild dog kill which was evident that I had missed. On this occasion it was a female nyala and knowing that you have just missed one of the most spectacular sightings of the wilderness by minutes is always a little disappointing! That was how I felt yesterday when for the third day in a row I missed the wild dogs on a kill, and witnessing the actual kill as well as watching them eat their prey within a matter of minutes and then dash off to the den to feed their puppies. Last night I was amazed to see a sight that nobody in the team had ever seen. A verreaux eagle owl eating the fresh kill, at dusk. These incredible owls have been known to kill some incredible prey species like spotted eagle owls and other raptors but they are seldom known to scavenge. It just goes to show that the bush never fails to delight you in the most amazing ways.
