The four small cubs of the right-eared Mountain lioness are all alive and well. Although the cubs are at a very vulnerable age their mom seems be doing an excellent job at ensuring their safety and provides them with plenty of milk for rapid growth. The cubs seem to be flourishing and are quite fat. A sneak peak at ones nether regions as it swished its...

Since being left by their mother and older sister the three young males have not been doing well at all. They have lost condition dramatically and do not seem to be making any positive progress. They are very thin and have never been seen making an effort to hunt. They are simply too young and should still be under the care and guidance of their mother....

My current guests are staying at &Beyond Phinda Rock Lodge for four nights, and as this is their first trip to Africa they are very eager to see all this magnificent continent has to offer, especially in terms of the wildlife. After three drives all we still needed to see of the larger mammals was the elusive leopard. We decided to head to the...

Lion and buffalo interaction on Phinda Private Game Reserve is quite uncommon mainly because of the availability of easier prey such as nyala and warthog, but today was different. I often wonder about how much happens in the bush when we are not there to witness it. Today a buffalo cow and calf were killed in the early afternoon with no one around to...

The Ubombo Mountain range ending in the southern reaches of Phinda are an extension of the great East African Rift Valley that was formed millions of years ago, the Rhyolite rock formations that make up these mountains form the western border of Maputaland. Phinda at its southern tip is one of the most ecologically diverse reserves in Africa.
As we...

The baby wildebeest as usual marked off the festive season by arriving from mid-December onwards. There are now youngsters in every herd. Their colouring is very different from the adults and is more of a fawn type of brown. One of the interesting features of both zebra foals and wildebeest calves is that from birth their bellies are at the same height as...

I had guests that were only staying for one night and I wanted to make it special for them. They had been to Phinda Private Game Reserve many times before and had never seen the elusive leopard. While we were sitting with one of the male lions at sunset hoping that he would roar, another ranger called in a leopard sighting not too far off. I told my...

Today was the best day’s game viewing I’ve had on Phinda in a long time, probably since the lion/buffalo interaction in November last year. Its amazing how these days happen in summer, considering that winter is the peak season for game viewing. As the day progressed my guests and I couldn’t believe the sightings we were having, and I told them that...

Over the past few days the male lion coalition has been separated, one was mating with a lioness from the North Pride, and the Blue-eyed male has been mating with the Fagolweni female around Saddle Drive. Last night, we watched the male in the South leave the Fagolweni female and begin roaring to his brother in the North. We followed him for an hour after...
