Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
Pure Luck
Its not everyday I get to see a new bird after working at Madikwe for the past 4 years. Yesterday was one of those very exciting moments and I got to see a Bat Hawk for the first time. After many trips to Phinda to try and find this elusive raptor Madikwe finally delivered the goods to my amazement. I went back to the records of when the last confirmed Bat Hawk sighting was in Madikwe and that was in 1994. Its just incredible that it had to be sitting there in the open when I drove past and manage to get great photo’s.
