Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
Queleas by the thousands!
With the reserve starting to get extremely dry the red billed queleas have started to form massive flocks of thousands, and the best place to see them is at one of the few water sources within that area. So yesterday we made our way to see these birds with the best time being sunset as this is when they come down to drink. Well it was better than I had thought, the number of birds was unbelievable, and with the sunset behind them made it even better. We sat in silence with just the sounds of the birds and cameras as they swarmed for about 20 minutes.
