Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
Rare sighting of a cheetah
A lone Cheetah male was found in the early morning. This is a truly special sighting as there are not many Cheetah at Madikwe. It was noted that he was nervous and was walking from one Acacia thicket to the next, we speculated, that it may have been due to our presence, or that he was in an area that has a high lion population and that he may have been very alert for possible danger from lions. It was because of this nervousness that not many game drive vehicles had the chance to see him and he was soon left alone.
