Kirkman's Kamp, with its spectacular views of the unspoilt wilderness and the Sabi Sand River, is regarded as one of the best loved lodges in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. A well known historic camp, originally built in the early 1920's Kirkmans Kamp celebrates the atmosphere of an early South African lowveld homestead.
Rhino fight and Leopard Spots
Early morning at Kirkman’s Kamp. We found a crash of 6 white Rhino trying to catch the first morning sun in an open spot between Marula Trees. As we approached one female with an about 2 year old calf started snorting. Luckily not at us. She roared at a big bull that came closer. Over the sudden the situation went out of control. The old female started to chase the big bull, the calf squealing next to her. Then a young bull got involved and started snorting from the other corner. And another young female approached the fight. She just wanted to have a look what disturbed the family unit as the big bull ran at her. The youngster got chased in circles and ended up trying to hide behind our vehicle. Well done. The bull lost visual of her and trotted angrily away. The exiting time we spend with the Rhino brought us another surprise. A female leopard appeared next to us on her way to mark her territory and we of course enjoyed the sighting that led us away from the grumpy family of white Rhino.
What a great event to have witnessed! Having the opportunity to read about it allows me to possibly pick up the continuing activities of the rhinos and leopards seen on my visit earlier in the week. Cheers.
