Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
romantic sundowner!
Last night my guests requested that we go to a popular water hole and conduct a “game drive” from the dam wall. This time of the year, when it is very dry in Madikwe the water holes are often very busy in the late afternoon. Unfortunately this was not the case last night. We sat at the water hole for about two hours without seeing anything- a rare situation indeed. We decided to stick it out and wait. Our patience paid of! As the sun was setting a Brown Hyeana came down to drink and then slinked away. Shortly after that we where further privileged with a pair of White Rhino on their way down to drink. As we watched them we realized they where not here to drink but to mate!! This is the first time I have ever seen rhinos mating and believe it is a very rare sighting indeed. They proceeded to mate then came down to drink and slowly moved away. It was a very relaxing and rewarding game drive! Sorry I didn’t get any photos. I will post the footage when we get a video application on wildwatch
