Even in the driest of environments little goes to waste; here a dung beetle is rolling some dry oryx dung pellet.

While we were driving next to the dunes looking at some falcons, we saw a bird passing by. We took out our binos to get a closer look at it and to our surprise it was a golden-tail woodpecker. This birds are often quite shy and not easily seen. I was over joyed to finally get to see one.

For the first time at Sossusvlei the blue wildebeest was spotted by Sossusvlei Desert Lodge rangers around the Kwessiegat area. There were reports that they had been seen in the Sossusvlei area recently. We believe this animal has moved into this area because of the amount of grass as a result of the good rains we've had this year. Photo by Jacques...

This brown hyena was seen walking past in front of our guests who were stargazing. Hyenas are seldom seen and this one appeared on the night of full moon. Photo by Jacques van Eck

We went on early morning birding trip with few rangers to plan for our Big birding day. After identifying a couple of birds we came across this Greater Kestrel on the ground feeding on something. We looked through our binoculars and imagine, to our big surprise, it was eating oryx dung! In my nine years at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge this is the first...

A Pale Chanting Goshawk flying over the water that has collected in Sossusvlei. With the water there is an abundance of prey for the goshawk and sights like these can be seen regularly.

With all the rain we have experienced this year the Vlei at Sossus has had a little water and we are seeing some interesting birds frequenting Sossusvlei .We have seen Pied Avocets, Black-wing Stilts and South African Shelduck at the water. The Shelduck managed to raise a clutch of 3 and they can still be seen today.

On our way back from the morning drive we spotted four cheetahs resting in one of the acacia trees. We had a great view of them for about five minutes then before they ran into the grass. The desert now is full of tall grass that makes it difficult to see small creatures as well as shy animals. It's a very good thing to see cheetahs active mid day in the...

It's time for the birds of prey to start to breed in the Namib desert. I find two chicks in the nest for the very first time and I spent half and hour watching them because of the funny call that they were making and I could not understand why. Suddenly the mother arrived with a long sand snake to feed the chicks and the snake was still alive. The mother...
