We woke to the sound of lions roaring all around the camp this morning. The Selati males that have just taken over the western sector from the once mighty Mapogo coalition were here. What a way to start the day?! We set off in what was probably the coldest morning so far this winter and I forgot my gloves! It wasn't long before we were surrounded by...

2012 Ngala is back in action and living up to its name. Ngala means 'Lion' in the local language – Shangaan. In the past year or so there has been a big power struggle within most of the prides that we see on Ngala, so we haven’t seen the numbers of lions that Ngala used to be known for. But things have settled and in the last week we...

The cool autumn breeze flushed a series of goosebumps from rangers and guests alike as we set off from Mountain Lodge just before sunrise. The traditional pre-winter morning mist spilled over the ancient sand dunes towards the Indian Ocean. My guests had arrived very late the previous evening and this was their first drive. We had one thing on our...

Every now and again we have the most incredible sightings. Today's wild dog / vulture interaction was no exception. But sometimes a photo says more than a 1000 words. At Kirkman's Kamp we also use a Facebook page where you can follow us on a daily basis. Please look up Kirkmans Kamp Private Game Reserve on Facebook and then Click , LIKE....

Of all the things I was expecting to see this morning, wild dogs were NOT one of them, I assure you. As part of our training, we’ve been out most mornings and evenings with the guys here riding shotgun, and watching and learning how the professionals do it. I was riding with Dalson in the driving seat and Justice in the tracker’s, and...

After a long seven week work cycle, Allyn (guide) and myself made an early break for it on this cold Monday morning to get off the reserve and on holiday, trying to keep a low profile not to bump into any game drive vehicles. We came across this extremely relaxed, and extremely curious Lilac breasted roller... And even though we were already in holiday...

We drove from Phinda Mountain Lodge in the afternoon in search of the lions. It was just Vincent and myself in the vehicle. We went to the last position where they were last seen which was at the quarry just off Sodwana Bay road. We got there and found their tracks. We followed the tracks on Mangoose Alley. The tracks went off of Mangoose Alley towards...

It was quite a surprise to see this "nocturnal" critter crossing the road at 10 o'clock in the morning after a long game drive...his welcome appearance closed down the already exciting morning with smiles all around!

We had been witness to a "love match" between two leopards and by way of celebration moved off for a sundowner at McKenzies waterhole. It was not to be since the hippo therein found it all too boring until joined by a bull elephant who decided to bathe under the light of the full moon. What a wonderful trio of sightings within 30 minutes of one another!

Amongst the many sightings of leopard during 6 unforgettable days at Dulini Lodge , "Miss Playful" as her shangaan name translates, seemed to sense her beauty and composed this shot for us perfectly. Amongst all the Sabi Sand leopards she is the most arboreal.
