THE DOGS ARE BACK!
The dogs are back! The pack of wild dogs moved off in early April and made their first appearance back on the Sandibe concession in mid August. A few days later we were out on a drive and found the dogs on an island not too far from the lodge – 20 adults and 7 puppies. They started moving and we followed at a distance … They were headed back in the direction from which we had just come towards the lodge. When they reached the water crossing closest to the lodge they hesitated, none of them wanting to take the first plunge! Suddenly one decided to “take the plunge” and the rest of the pack followed, leaving only the puppies behind on the other side. The adults went on and a little later made 2 kills, one of which was an impala near the staff village. The guests and myself were lucky to see the dogs feasting on the impala. With such a big pack to feed, meal times are a frenzy and within a short time there was nothing left of the impala. After the kill one of the older females returned to the water crossing and collected the puppies to join the pack.
